The Importance of an Advocate
Recently, a woman contacted S. Gerber & Associates for advice. She had just learned that her mother, who had had surgery on a broken neck, was being discharged from the nursing home in two days. She’d assumed that, given her mother’s need for rehabilitation, her mother would be in the nursing home long-term, so she hadn’t made any arrangements for when her mother was discharged.
The nursing home was following Medicare guidelines, but nobody there had communicated with my new client about the impending release until the last minute—and they didn’t tell her she could appeal the discharge to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. We quickly filed the appeal, which meant that her mother could remain in the nursing home until CMMS ruled on the appeal.
Unfortunately, most people don’t know to seek advice when dealing with a nursing home or healthcare facility or where to get good advice. That’s why having an advocate, not just for the parent but also for the family, is essential. This is true even for routine services.
At S. Gerber & Associates, we combine in-home care with consultation so you can make the best decisions and get the quality of care you deserve from all the services you receive, not just the ones we provide. Hopefully, this will relieve some of the stress of providing for care for your loved one.
